The active shooter is the rare event the church prepares for. Child sexual abuse is the common one it often does not. The insurers covering most U.S. Protestant churches receive more than 260 reports a year of a minor sexually abused in a church setting, and case consultants believe that is less than half of what actually occurs. About 93 percent of child victims knew the person who abused them.SAFE (Safeguarding and Abuse Fundamentals for the Church Environment) equips your church safety ministry to stand watch over the children in your care. This is not a liability seminar. Protecting children is a biblical mandate, and this course treats it that way. You will learn to see the threat early, interrupt it, and hand it to the professionals whose job it is to investigate.WHAT YOU WILL LEARNWhy churches are targeted by predators, and the cultural vulnerabilities that give them access. The stages of grooming and the behavioral indicators at each stage, including how predators groom the adults around the child. How to recognize abuse of position when the threat wears a title. Hidden cameras: where they hide, how to run a restroom sweep, and how to preserve evidence if you find a device. What to watch on patrol: the areas, the indicators, and the four steps when something is off (Observe, Verify, Escalate, Document). Warning signs in a child, why children stay silent, and how to respond when a child begins to disclose.
